5 Critical Components of an Effective Daily Plan

***This post may contain affiliate links. See my "Disclaimer" link for additional details.***

Most days, I make a daily plan in my planner. You should consider doing this, at least on busy days, even if you track all upcoming stuff on a weekly spread.

The Power of a Planner Over Scraps of Paper

Even though I use my planner regularly and mostly keep it organized, there are times when the sticky notes and random entries get overwhelming.

You Can Solve Your Planner Problems

Some people have called me a planner guru. They tease me about how I have to write everything down and comment, "you're so organized."

HA HA HA HA HA!

I am such an imperfect plannerd!

Today's Flashback Post proves it. (Make sure to read it.)

Since then, I've changed the tip that I gave in that flashback post from writing computer-related tasks on a post-it app to using OneNote with my Surface Pro 3.

Depending on your laptop, you might decide to use a post-it app or OneNote.

Otherwise, though, I doing things the exact same way. The solutions still work years later.

How One Simple List Can Reduce Food Waste

I've found a simple solution (in my planner, of course) to prevent food waste, save time, and help me stay on the weight loss track.

One simple list can make sure that leftovers don't get thrown away!

menu, budget, weight-loss

I jot a list on a post-it of any leftovers that are on the leftover shelf in fridge.

TIP: Create a designated shelf for foods that are leftover or must be used quickly.

I just move the list from week-to-week in my planner and use it to meal plan each night.

TIP: Note the number of servings left and the number of calories, and you are all set for weight loss.

If you enjoyed this simple tip, please share in your social media circles!

Planner Trick: The Repeating Task Tag

When tasks need to be done again and again, I generally just circle them. When they gets done, I rewrite them where I need to do them next.

Some things, though, not only have to be recopied all the time, but they are on a schedule and too important to miss doing.

I've identified three things that fit those criteria:

1. Daily Tasks - I have a checklist on my Surface Pro 3 in an app called Daily Tasks, but I need a note on my planner to remind me to do the daily tasks.

2. Work - Work is scheduled on my monthly calendar, but I like to know in a glance at my weekly task list when I'll next be working.

3. Blogs - I try to blog every day. Often, I have several blogs already scheduled and need to know when I next have to write a blog to stay ahead.

For those three things, I've started using movable post-it tabs.

The post-it tabs stand out against the rest of the page at a quick glance. They are simple to move to the next day when they are needed. And they are routine enough for me that recopying is not needed to remind my mind to do the task.

Note that I write them the same way as all other tasks - circle, context code, and action verb.

What tasks are repetitive enough and important enough for you to make movable tags for? Chores? Homework? Studying? Taking out the trash? Exercise?

Before and After: Better Post-it Colors for My Planner

Loyal Readers may have noticed that I don't care much for decorating my planner. It's already pretty on the outside, and the insides are just like I like them - practical.

But the wild colors available in most post-its, including the ones on my dashboard, drive my eyes crazy. Brights greens, yellows, and pinks are just not me.

Before:

Fortunately, I found a new line - the New York City Collection - and I love all the colors (except the yellow). The light greys and blues coordinate quite well with my black and white Franklin Covey Flourish.

I am much happier with my dashboard now.

Why don't companies make stuff like Post-its in more subtle colors?

Oops...Planner Mistakes (And Solutions)

***This post may contain affiliate links. See my "Disclaimer" link for additional details.***

I am not perfect.

I'm pausing to let my real life friends stop nodding so hard. They'll get whiplash doing that! :)

Over the years, I've made many mistakes with my planner, in particular. Some of them just made it more difficult to use. Other mistakes meant that I didn't use my planner at all and experienced planner fail.

So that my Loyal Readers don't feel all alone with their imperfections, I thought I would compile some of my common errors for you, along with solutions.
