How to Be Creative in a Planner Without Wasting Time or Space

My planner philosophy is pretty simple.

Write down things that need doing. Keep it easy to read. Do the things that need doing.

I don't have much time or valuable planner space (like the weekly pages) to waste on decorating.

planner, planner tips and tricks, decorating

There are two exceptions.

1. DECORATE PERMANENT PAGES

Pages like tabs, dashboards, and yearly recurring future pages will be used again and again, so those are great places to spend time decorating.

2. DOODLE ON PAST DAYS

TIP: Use a highlighter so that material is still easy to read.

In the above picture, I did just that! As an added bonus, I get to easily find today's planner entry.

I used to try and decorate my planner. Then realized I'm looking at a page for a day or two, and that's it...what's the point? I will decorate my monthly page, and keep cute things in the card slots up front, and a fun dashboard, but that's about it. I have enough other places that are paper-based to decorate. And thank goodness, too!

I found that I'm happier with just a little bit of color, but not enough to be a distraction. I put a few stickers or rub-ons on different pages (I keep a few in the front of my planner, and found it's a great thing to do while sitting & waiting in airports or other times like that.) I also have a few clear page dividers with some family pictures or other things I like. The rest can be plain & practical. :)
